RAIQC and Oxford University Hospitals launch the 'Pulmonary Nodules on CT' training package

6 January 2025

RAIQC’s training platform has played a supportive role in helping Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) enhance their Lung Nodule service, which has been recognised for its safe, efficient, and patient-focused care. The Pulmonary Nodules on CT training package, developed on the RAIQC platform and funded by the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA), has provided specialist nurses with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage lung nodules and interpret CT scans.

Lung nodules, while mostly benign, require careful evaluation to identify cases that may indicate early-stage cancers. The web-based training package offers flexibility, allowing nurses to access the material remotely and at their own pace. This tailored approach has supported the development of their expertise in a way that aligns with the demands of a busy clinical environment.

Since the Lung Nodule service's inception in late 2022, the team has cleared a six-month backlog of cases within just a few months, further highlighting the effectiveness of the training and the dedication of the staff.

The impact of the initiative includes:

  • Faster patient care: Reduced time between CT scans and communication of results.
  • Fewer unnecessary follow-ups: A reduction in patients needing additional scans.
  • Enhanced safety protocols: Consistent monitoring and coding of CT reports across the Trust.
  • Efficient use of resources: Significant cost savings for OUH.

The Lung Nodule service and its outcomes have been shared at notable events such as the British Thoracic Oncology Group Annual Conference, the European Respiratory Society Conference, and the British Thoracic Society Conference, highlighting the collaborative effort behind its success.

RAIQC is pleased to have contributed to this initiative by providing a platform that facilitates accessible and effective training. This collaboration demonstrates how innovative approaches and teamwork can address healthcare challenges, improving both patient care and service efficiency.
